Teams That Will [Still] Miss The Playoffs

At the beginning of the season, I made some predictions. We now have 9 weeks left in the season and really 7 teams have a shot at making the playoffs. Let's take a look at how my predictions look now, and how I see things playing out in the final 9 weeks.

The Giant Killers
Preseason Rank: 8
Current Rank 7 (18 GB, 6.5 out of playoffs)
Play L-Trains and Brian's Fellows twice

At the beginning of the season, I called the Giant Killers the worst team in the league, but predicted that Braband would at least keep them in contention. Right now, that is where they are.

Giant Killer pitching got off to a great start with miracle starts, but none of the Scrap Heap Pitching Staff has really turned into a dependable starter. Even Hanson, Liriano, and Romero have had some really bad outings lately.

Offensively, The Giant Killers have been productive. Both Wright and Reyes have proven the doubters wrong so far this year. In fact, David Wright is one of the best fantasy players there is and regardless of what happens the rest of the year, he has justified the high draft pick. Reyes on the other hand is hurt again and will still be a question mark down the stretch. The rest of the Giant Killers' offense is solid.

The Giant Killers have been somewhat unlucky this year as seen in the Hellmuth standings, but much of that is due to dominating the first few weeks with surprisingly terrific pitching that has since returned to earth.

Updated Prediction: The Giant Killers will be playing golf in September.

The OzzieGuillens
Preseason Rank: 7
Current Rank 8 (40 GB, 29.5 out of playoffs)
Play Brian's Fellows and The Dynasty twice (lucky them...)

I didn't say much about the Guillens at the beginning of the season and I won't now. The Guillens are done for- barring an act of God. Even the gift of Josh Hamilton couldn't make a difference for the OGs. They still have not won a game since week 1. Let's take a look at their first 8 draft picks to see how they got to this point.

K Grady Sizemore - The OGs had no good keepers from last year and Sizemore was probably the best option, but he sucked this year and then got hurt. Sutor traded him for Adam Lind who has been the worst position player in the MLB this year and has since been released.

1. Matt Holliday - Sucked in the first half, but now heating up. This was probably an overdraft in March and it hasn't paid off.

2. Kendry Morales - Was off to a great start, possibly worthy of the high draft pick, but then he broke his leg stomping on home plate. Can't really fault Sutor for this one not panning out.

3. Jacoby Ellsbury - Injured virtually all year, can't fault Sutor for this one.

4. Pablo Sandoval - One year wonder turned flop in 2010, Kung Fu Panda lost all his power and was recently released.

5. Derek Jeter - Not living up to the great year he had last year, but has been decent.

6. Ichiro Suzuki - Ichiro sucks and should never get drafted in this league.

7. Aaron Hill - See Sandoval, Pablo.

Updated Prediction: The Guillens WILL win a matchup before the season ends.

The Trolley Dodgers
Preseason Rank: 6
Current Rank 3 (11 GB, 6 game playoff cushion)
Play The Dynasty and The Rise of Wang twice

At the beginning of the season I criticized the Trolleys' offense. They haven't been that bad except that I was 100% right about their lack of a 2B and SS being a problem. Martin Prado has been a godsend, but the Trolleys still lack a decent SS.

The Trolleys have been extremely lucky this season, but I think the luck is going to run out over the last 9 weeks (much like it did last year). The Trolleys have the second toughest route to the playoffs and I see them falling short.

Updated Prediction: The Trolleys will panic as they slide out of the playoffs in week 17 and never recover.

Brian's Fellows
Preseason Rank: 5
Current Rank 5 (17 GB, 5.5 out of playoffs)
Play The OzzieGuillens and The Giant Killers twice

The Fellows have done a great job this year staying in the race after a tough 2009. The Fellows have had good pitching from Johan Santana, Cole Hamels, Carl Pavano, and Bronson Arroyo. The midseason trade of Adam Dunn and ultimately the injury to Utley could be the reason the Fellows don't make the playoffs. Having said that, the Fellows have a chance with one of the weakest schedules to close out the season.

Updated Prediction: As I said in March, Brian's Fellows will narrowly miss the playoffs.
